How to flaunt perfect red lips this love season?

Lipstick has been a make-up staple since forever, dating as far back as 5,000 years ago. That’s a lot of lipstick love! From Marilyn Monroe to Madonna, the A-list prove time and time again that red lips never go out of style. Gwyneth Paltrow even once said: “Beauty, to me, is about being comfortable in your own skin. That, or a kick-ass red lipstick.”

For Autumn/Winter 15 the runways were all about “proper red” says MAC’s director of artistry Terry Barber.

“Red went grown up, possibly anti-neon, a backlash against neon bright in favour of a proper red,” he told Cover Media. “A grown up red. Dark crimson, terracotta. Red that’s not meant to be a screaming statement, it’s more of a style statement. Try adding brown to red.”

If you’re already well acquainted with one shade of red, why not mix it up and add more to your collection. After all, Rita Ora previously stated: “I have every shade of red lipstick you can imagine.”
MAC's matte Chili shade

MAC’s matte Chili shade adds a slight orange undertone to red, or go for B. Makeup’s new Suki shade which is screen siren worthy. NARS’ limited edition Hardwired Lipstick in Deadly Catch is worth splashing out for, and will give any look a classic finish. Or Maybelline’s Superstay 14hr lipstick in Continuous Cranberry will give a more subtle take on the colour.

“Red doesn’t really go away,” Terry said of Spring/Summer 16 trends. “I think this season it’s had a big reinvention, not being quite so pillar box red, being very tonal. I saw a lot of the brick, warm reds. I liked the almost saffron red at Kenzo with a high gloss.

“Lips are moving away from just being about classic. How a woman plays with the tone of a red on quite a bare face. Reds tell a very interesting story.”
