India can be pretty full-on at times, so when you find a nice place to relax you usually end up staying for ages… as we did in McLeod Ganj.

McLeod Ganj is high in the Indian Himalayas in the mountainous state of Himachal Pradesh. It’s home to the Tibetan government in exile, the Dalai Lama, several thousand Tibetan refugees, and quite a few travellers!

Hopefully this will give other travellers ideas and Travel Advice about what to do in McLeod Ganj!

See the Waterfall in Bhagsu

Located just a pleasant, 30-minute walk east of McLeod Ganj is the rubbish-strewn village of Bhagsu. While a few travelers opt to stay in Bhagsu, most prefer to walk through the village to the impressive waterfall just beyond.

Tsug la Khang, The Dalai Lama’s temple, is the life-blood of the village. It houses the Namgyal Monastery and shrine rooms.
Around the temple hill there is a long meditation trail — LingKhor — with small shrines, stupas, and a massive chorten. The shrines near the chorten are always covered in thousands of prayer flags placed by devotees.

The temple is located a short walk down the hill from the main square at the centre of town.

Dal Lake

Dal Lake is a small mid-altitude lake (1,775 m above sea level) near a very beautiful village “Tota Rani”. The lake is surrounded by deodar trees.Several kinds of fish live in the lake, which has greenish water most of the year.

St John’s Church in the Wilderness

This small, neo-Gothic style Anglican church, dedicated to John the Baptist, was built in 1852. The church is known for its Belgian stained-glass windows painted by an Italian artist. The church is about 2 km from McLeod Ganj, towards Forsythe Ganj.

You will find that some times you can bargain for 1/3 or half the price. Cheapest Shops you will find in the main market near to Dalai Lama’s Residence.

THC Employs newly arrived refugees in the weaving of Tibetan carpets. visitors are welcome to watch the weavers in action. For made-to-order clothing, including Tibetan dresses, blouses and waistcoats head over the road to the tailoring section across the road.

Seed Cafe: If you want a place with scenic views then this is your best bet. Surrounded by glass windows it has floor seating as well as tables by the side. It’s away from the hustle bustle of the main square so you can sit here for hours, read a book, play a game of chess or simply gaze at the stunning Dhauladhar range outside. In the evening it takes on a different look with live music and open mic nights. And when it comes to food, they’ve got it absolutely right – from delicious sandwiches, pancakes, pizzas, lasagnas, pastas, noodles, Continental bakes to sinful desserts.

en: No prizes for guessing what this place would offer. Besides an exquisite range of pizzas and pastas try their selection of salads, shakes and desserts. The gnocchi in pesto sauce is particularly good. And wrap up the meal with fresh waffles or pancakes. You’ll come back for seconds. The restaurant has posters of Hollywood films.

Tibet Kitchen: This restaurant serves scrumptious Tibetan goodies. Still, spare a thought for the Bhutanese dishes on the menu even as you tuck into your thenthuks, thukpas, sausages, and succulent momos (steamed, not fried). Even with three floors and a lounge on top, it’s often full.
